Although the slaves had been freed most of them did not know how to use the freedom. To some, freedom was exemption from work while others thought through freedom they would not be able to work for whites any more. Most of the slaves were illiterate hence had limited ways to earn a living (Dread, 2013).After civil war, the period of reconstruction was a situation that slaves in Georgia plantation had to adjust to. The end of civil war meant that no slave would work anymore in the plantations. Freed slaves seem to have little options and the suffering, ongoing. Although the constitution granted them legal rights, slaves had fewer options to earn a living (Eric, 2013)The freed slaves were left with four options to choose from namely; fight for ownership of land, move to better settlements, seek employment form former masters or share crop. Slaves that opted to secure own land, would have the opportunity to work in their farms and support themselves. Slaves that opted to move to better settlements chose to go to the cities to seek job opportunities. Through the new labor system laws, former masters could also employ former slaves. This means that terms and rules of engagement were reviewed and improved to suit the needs of the former slaves. The freed slaves should have also opted for share cropping where slaves would work in a farm and receive a fixed share of the crop. Although slavery came to an end, the attitudes of the whites towards the blacks did not change. The aspect of being ex-slaves weighed heavily on the blacks same case to how they were still treated. Restrictive laws still barred the blacks from human rights, education rights and access to facilities. There was an ongoing opinion that black people were inferior. The blacks however had slave defenders such as religion and h umanitarianism. These were the only available sources that slaves could utilize to fight for their rights. The defenders would help them reduce the hostility and public attitude against the slaves. The defenders were the right people to assist slaves get justice in terms of health care needs, wage improvement, education and other amenities. The defenders would also come in handy to dispute discriminative laws and allowing gradual integration of ex-slaves into the society (Peshevski, 2009). In the overall, slaves went through difficult situations that disoriented them. The fight for freedom was also challenging same case to the aftermath of freedom. Ex-slaves were found it difficult to adjust to the new life hence many died of hanger and diseases.
